Who Makes It Happen?

Educators

Our educators are activators of learning, creating a 21st century culture and providing access to the supports and resources that learners need to succeed.

So while the teacher's role is evolving, they will retain responsibility for many of the critical classroom management and instructional tasks that have always been a part of that role.

They are still very much available to provide direct instruction - to individuals or groups - as needed.  They are still responsible for regular and on-going assessment, ensuring that learners have mastered the curricular outcomes. In other words, that they have done what the Ministry expects of them in order to graduate.

They must ensure that the culture and language of the classroom is respectful, inclusive, open, and collaborative; that noise levels are acceptable and that focus is maintained.  If students fail to demonstrate adequate maturity to handle certain freedoms, then it remains the teacher's responsibility to manage and discipline individual behaviour as necessary.

The most notable change in the role of the educator is that they must prepare and organize their educational resources, assessments and learning outcomes in a way that learners can access it, find what they need, and understand what is expected of them quickly and easily.

Learners

In a PeBL learning environment, both freedom and responsibility are bestowed upon the learner.  In ways that they likely have not had before, personalized learning grants them voice and choice in determining the path towards achievement of personal and curricular goals.

They also spend time understanding themselves as learners; their habits and tendancies, strengths and weaknesses, their passions and interests.  Armed with this knowledge, they are then equipped to make solid decisions about how, when, where and with whom they do their best learning.

Parents

Parents play an active support role both in the school and at home. They can help their child to better understand their personal learning style and explore what motivates them to learn their best.

Particularly with younger children, it can be helpful for parents to know the language of the classroom and - when possible - incorporate that language into the home. Terms like self-regulation and learning ladder might make for some interesting dinner time talk.

In the case of older children, talking with them about their learner profile can enlighten both of you to their hidden strengths and weaknesses and start to identify ways that you can build up either one.

Community

In a PeBL learning environment, we gain knowledge from the world around us.  Within our communities, we can find many different perspectives, opportunities and so much knowledge to enrich our in-class learning experience.

Community members can bring that information into our classroom or invite us to come to them, experiencing their world in action.

Division

When it comes to supporting our schools and staff in the implementation of personalized learning, Division efforts are focused and strategic. Our new team of PeBL mentors will be well trained and have access to a vast library of resources to share and disperse amongst classroom teachers.  Together, the mentors will create best practices, templates and planning tools and then spend time teaching our teachers how to apply them.

Administrative planning and decision making will also reflect the principles and employ the tools of personalized learning.
